5 Simple Ingredients for Energy Balls
Not only is this recipe is vegan and gluten-free, it calls for just five ingredients. It’s a healthy raw food that’s deliciously simple
Healthy Energy Balls with Dates
One of the key ingredients to these delicious energy balls are dates. There are two types of dates to choose from — Medjool and Deglet Noor.
The difference is their origin. There are many cultivars of dates and each one is more popular in different countries.
In Israel, the Medjool date is the most common one and to my opinion its also the tastiest one. I find the other types of dates a bit drier and less succulent.
The other difference is the color, Deglet Noor are lighter and their name is driven by that – Noor means light in Arabic.
Tahini Adds Special Flavor and Minerals
Besides dates and maple syrup, this recipe for energy balls calls for coconut oil, coconut and tahini.
Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds and is a very common food in the Middle East. Sesame seeds boast 20 percent protein by weight, making them a much higher protein food than nuts such as peanuts.
Tahini is most often used in savory dishes like hummus, but it can also be part of a sweet dish and adds a unique sultry flavor to desserts.
In Israel you find Tahini in every grocery store or supermarket. In North America, it’s usually found in a health food store. If you want to replace the Tahini you can use almond butter or other nut butters. However, if you replace it, the energy balls will have a different flavor.
Tahini is high in fat but be aware that these are good fatty acids like omega 3 and omega 6 which are very important for people on a vegan diet. Moreover Tahini is also a great source for calcium as well as minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, lecithin, potassium and iron.
When producing Tahini, it can be made with raw sesame seeds or roasted sesame seeds, and that will affect the fat levels of the Tahini.

What are you waiting for? Start the recipe for these easy treats now! All you need is 15 minutes!
Process the dates, coconut (divided with some reserved for the topping), maple syrup and tahini until they are chopped into small pieces and form a large ball
Form the date mixture into small balls. The recipe yields about 10-12 energy balls, depending on the size you make them.
Then roll each of the balls in flaked coconut and place in the fridge to cool for several hours.
Easy to make and packed with goodness, these energy balls are a healthy feel-good treat! They’re also pretty enough to give as gifts.
Tips for Making Healthy Energy Balls
- You can control the sweetness of the energy balls by adding more or less maple syrup. Just remember that dates are sweet on their own and you might not need the maple syrup at all.
- The coconut flakes are very small and unsweetened. If you choose to use sweetened coconut flakes, don’t use the maple syrup because the dates are also sweet and the balls will be too sweet to eat.
- Keep the energy balls in the fridge up to 5 days in an air tight container.

About Rénana’s Kitchen
It wasn’t until I moved out of my parent’s house that my love for cooking and baking took root. And I’m so glad that it did. Years passed before I became a so-called expert in the kitchen. Pinterest and Instagram helped to inspire my recipes and of course other bloggers lent a hand.
Mostly the recipes I whip up are vegan and vegetarian, I believe that living a healthy lifestyle is key. Although I do bake cookies and decadent cakes, it’s important to have balance!
Not only is my love for food well-known but my passion for food photography is as well. All of the photos on my blog are my own! My blog Rénana’s Kitchen may be a hobby, as I work as a web developer in the day, but it’s a hobby I’ll continue to indulge for years to come.

Energy balls are such a good way to carry easy-to-eat energy snacks around with you, knowing everything that has gone into them. Dates and tahini are a favourite combination of mine, and I love the addition of maple and coconut flavours.
